I live in the city, and eating out several times a week used to seem impossible to me. In the past few years I've learned a little more about food, and become just as comfortable in a restaurant as I am in my own kitchen. In the past I was more hesitant about being out to dinner several times a week, but after learning what works on a regular basis (and what absolutey doesn't) I do it all the time. There are some restaurants that bristle at the thought of special ordering, and have menus that are difficult to find anything healthy to order, but I can find something that fits into my healthy way of eating almost anywhere.
I'm going to write several blogs over the next few weeks about what I order at various restaurants, as I am often asked about what I order when I go out, and how I can stay lean with a busy social schedule.
The other night I went to Boston Chops with my friend Nicole, and had a delicious (and healthy) dinner. I'm maintaining my physique right now , so I will give an example of what I ate the other night (to maintain) as opposed to what I would eat if I wanted to get a little leaner.
I ordered a beautiful glass of Sauvignon Blanc to start, and Nicole and I split half a dozen fresh, and super chilled oysters between the two of us. For the main course I had the petite filet mignon, and although I usually skip the sauces, I ordered the Boston Chops signature sauce on the side because Nicole said that it was simply too good to pass up. We split a side of spicy broccoli, and butternut squash with apples to go with the steak. After dinner, instead of ordering dessert I ordered a peppermint tea to satisfy my sweet tooth. So what did I do differently that made my meal a sustainable way to eat out more frequently?
1. I skipped the bread
2. I skipped the fries. Sorry, if you want to stay very lean....skip them and only enjoy them once in a great while.
3. No dessert. I usually have it once a week, but 4 times a week is pushing it.
My meal was beyond delicious and I have never had steak cooked as perfectly as the steak at Boston Chops. I don't feel deprived eatng this way (how could I ?) all of the food was so flavorful and fresh! Just a few alterations to your diet and eating out can be fun (without the gulit!)
